As you probably know by now, our founder, Hanna Putjato, started out as a lash technician before launching London Lash Pro - and a very successful one at that! We’ve always prided ourselves on working closely with the lash tech community - after all, where would we be without you?
To help you on your way, we wanted to provide any budding lash artists out there with our top tips on how to become a lash tech in the US! Read on to learn more.
What is a certified lash technician?
To begin, let’s take it back to the basics. A certified lash technician is somebody who is licensed to do eyelash extensions, either on a self-employed basis or through working for a business.
However, depending on which state you live in, you will likely berequired to have a cosmetology/esthetician license before you’re able to get certified as a lash tech. If you’re currently studying for your esthetician license, you’re already heading in the right direction! This is often a crucial first step to becoming a lash artist.

Do you have to be licensed to do lashes?
Some might ask:Is it necessary to be certified? To this we would answer: absolutely!
Not every state will require you to have a lash certification, however if you’re carrying out lash extension applications unlicensed, you are classified as ‘unregulated’ by the Board of Cosmetology. This can cause all kinds of legal issues further down the line. For this reason, we’d always recommend putting in the time, effort and money to become certified!
Not to mention that this is a fantastic way to make your lash business more reputable, helping you to build a great client base.
How to become a certified lash tech
To become a certified lash tech, you will want to find an accredited lash training course. To begin with, you should figure out exactly what your state requires - do you need to have an esthetician or cosmetology licence first?
From here, you will want to complete a comprehensive lash extension foundation training course - there are various programs available so it’s important that you find the right one for you. If you are working to a tight schedule, you may be best opting for a 3 day course. Or, if you want to break up your training and study over a longer period of time, there are some courses that can take up to two months to be completed.
Whichever lash training course you go for, make sure it is taught by a high-quality lash artist with the relevant certifications. You want to be sure that they cover everything you need, including:
- The best health and safety practices for lash technicians
- How to safely and beautifully apply different types of eyelash extensions
- Which lashes and lash maps suit particular eye shapes
- What to do in the case of allergies
- How to prevent chemical burn
You should also check out reviews/testimonials to help the decision-making process!
Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can take advanced lash courses such as:
- Volume and mega volume eyelash extension training
- Advanced Styling/mapping classes
- Lash business training

You have the option to obtain your lash certification by taking either online or in-person classes, or a mixture of both. We would always recommend that beginners attend in-person training so that they can gain hands-on experience! Many accredited training courses will also provide you with training materials (such as eyelash extensions, lash glue and lash tools), which may raise the price of the course slightly, but can be invaluable for those starting out.
When it comes to completing an advanced course, however, online training can be a fantastic, accessible way to broaden your skills and knowledge efficiently! We offer a prestigious Russian Volume online lash training course which we’ll briefly discuss further on in this post!
How much is lash extension training?
The cost of lash courses varies from state to state and depends on factors such as the length of time it takes to complete the course, whether training materials are included, whether it is remote or in-person... the list goes on!
A lash certification course in the US can cost anywhere between $300-$2,000!
